University of Manchester (Department of Pharmacy)

Manchester has a great history in both medical and scientific achievement. As early as 1824, John Dalton - the Great Mancunian and pioneer of chemical science - was conducting classes in pharmaceutical chemistry at Manchester's Medical School.
In 1883 a dedicated department of pharmacy was established at the University, and in 1904 Manchester became the first British university to offer an Honours degree in the subject.
The department was renamed the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences during the 1990s, reflecting its growth in size and the expansion of both its Pharmacy Practice and Pharmaceutical Science research and teaching activities.
The School also developed a close working relationship with local hospitals, making joint appointments to the posts of clinical lectureships. Academic staff work for 20% of their time within the local NHS trusts and NHS pharmacists provide clinical tutorial support to undergraduates. The clinical components of this curriculum, taught to all 3rd and 4th year students, are a distinguishing feature of the Manchester MPharm.
