Rhodes University (School of Pharmaceutical Sciences)

Rhodes University situated in a city with a long tradition of excellence in education is essentially residential, accommodating over 2000 students in 30 university residences. Grahamstown, with its private and government schools, and the University, is the closest that South Africa has come to the traditional university towns of Europe. With a total of only 4500 students on the Grahamstown campus Rhodes provides a special environment which is long remembered and cherished by all who are privileged to study in Grahamstown.

RHODES has offered degree courses in Pharmacy since 1957 and to date has graduated 1987 pharmacists, 33 students with a BSc(Hons) in pharmacy, 50 MSc and 23 PhD students in the pharmaceutical sciences.

The Faculty is housed in a spacious building with well-designed lecture theatres and modern laboratories well-equipped with "state-of-the-art" instrumentation for teaching and research. Research equipment includes: gas-liquid chromatographs, high performance liquid chromatographs, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers (Bruker 400AMX and Perkin Elmer 60 MHz), Hewlett Packard 5988A GC/MS and Finnegan Matt GCQ and LCQ mass spectrometers.

The mission of the Faculty of Pharmacy is to engender an active commitment to promote and encourage research amongst staff and students which will ensure a sustainable research programme and produce graduates of distinction.
