Memorial University of Newfoundland (School of Pharmacy)

The School of Pharmacy at Memorial University is unique in Canada. Located in the Health Sciences Centre (HSC), it is the only Pharmacy program which is accommodated in the same building as the Faculty of Medicine and School of Nursing. The HSC complex also houses the General Hospital and the Dr. Bliss Murphy Cancer Treatment Centre and is physically joined with the Janeway Child Health and Rehabilitation Centre. This unique setting permits students to engage easily in interprofessional learning and in direct patient care activities.
MUN's School of Pharmacy is the smallest School in the country, admitting only 40 students to its program annually. The small class size facilitates close interaction between the faculty, staff and students and ensures they receive individual attention during their studies. Our faculty and staff are highly dedicated and supportive of our students and make every effort to ensure that the academic and social milieu of the School are conducive to an effective and enjoyable learning experience.
The School of Pharmacy is committed to providing an undergraduate program of quality and excellence that will produce individuals who will contribute significantly in all settings of pharmacy practice.
Students studying towards the B.Sc.(Pharmacy) degree will acquire a background in the mathematical and physical sciences, and humanities. Following this, students will receive an extensive education in pharmacy and the cognate health sciences and intensive practice experience.
The program of study leading to the B.Sc.(Pharmacy) has two phases and requires at least five years to complete.
Upon receiving the degree, graduates will qualify to write the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada examination. After successful completion of these examinations and an appropriate period of practice experience, graduates will qualify to apply for a license to practice pharmacy in Newfoundland and Labrador. They will also be eligible to apply for registration to practice in other jurisdictions in Canada.
Graduates of the program will be qualified to enter graduate studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland or elsewhere, subject to the usual entrance requirements. The School of Pharmacy at MUN offers graduate programs at both the Masters, M.Sc (Pharm) and Doctoral, Ph.D. level.
Through the scholarly pursuits of teaching, research and service, the School of Pharmacy is dedicated to:

  • preparing pharmaceutical care practitioners committed to life long learning;
  • fostering excellence and innovation in research and graduate studies;
  • developing and participating in professional practice and community outreach;
  • advancing the profession.
