The University of Western Australia (Master of Pharmacy)

Pharmacy is a growing profession with employment opportunities in community and hospital pharmacy, industry, academia, research, government and in the provision of specialized services such as home medication review. A 2005 independent survey of newly registered pharmacists in Australia has provided evidence for a very high employment rate and excellent remuneration competitive with all other professions.
The Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences of The University of Western Australia offers the program of Master of Pharmacy.
This program provides education and training leading to registration as a pharmacist. Also provides a direct pathway to a professional postgraduate qualification in pharmacy leading to registration as a pharmacist in Australia. The course builds upon previous tertiary studies in basic or applied science. Entry requires a bachelor degree. Master of Pharmacy graduates are eligible for registration as pharmacists in Australia following successful completion of a compulsory pre-registration traineeship.
The School and its Master of Pharmacy Programme are provisionally accredited by the Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) following review by the New Zealand and Australian Pharmacy Schools Accreditation Committee (an APC committee) in 2006/2007.
The programme provides two years (6 trimesters) of full time intensive instruction in the areas of: pharmacy practice, clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutics, medicinal chemistry, biomedicine and population health and research. And includes Placements in community and hospital pharmacy.
Teaching in the course draws on a wide spectrum of expertise in a number of faculties at UWA, including Life and Physical Sciences, Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, and Economics and Commerce. The syllabus integrates research activities at UWA in areas particularly relevant to the future of pharmacy and the pharmaceutical industry.
The academic programme begins in July of every year and entry will require a bachelor degree in biomedical / biophysical or allied health science. Prospective students lacking prerequisite knowledge may complete additional undergraduate units at UWA prior to enrolment.
The philosophy underpinning the academic content of the programme will ensure that graduates are able to meet the future health care needs of the community, provide leadership in the profession of pharmacy, and through the nexus between teaching and research at UWA, have a strong background for employment in the pharmaceutical / drug research industries.
