University of Cambridge (Department of Pharmacology)

Staff of the Department provide undergraduate teaching to students in both the Natural Sciences Tripos (NST) and the Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos (MVST) and the quality of its teaching was assessed by the HEFCE Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) in March 2000.The Department was awarded the maximum Quality Assurance Agency score of 24. The Agency's report (in PDF format) may be found here. There are more than 350 undergraduates reading MVST in their second year, and each takes the practical classes and lecture courses in Pharmacology ('Mechanisms of Drug Action' and 'Neurobiology'). In addition, about 60 students take the second year NST course in Pharmacology and around 40 students specialize in Part II Pharmacology in their third year.
In addition to the facilities provided within individual labs, the Department is also well equipped with central facilities for cell culture, centrifugation, liquid scintillation counting and computing. Every office and lab has access to computer networks and thereby to both communal facilities for printing etc., and to the Internet. Members of the Department also enjoy access to the Cambridge Multi-Imaging Centre (confocal microscopy, SEM, TEM, X-ray microanalysis) and to the Cambridge Centre for Molecular Recognition (peptide and oligonucleotide synthesis, etc.). The Department has its own library which also provides access to BIDS, Medline, etc., and this is supplemented by access to the libraries of other Departments and the University Library.
